Tedly Nightshade. I've had wrist problems, mostly from practicing and noodling around at lazy angles. A little time when it looks like your gitfiddling days are over, and one becomes extremely conscientious- Careful! What demon possessed me that I behaved so well? GP Island. Joined: Jul I just thought of something. They basically sucked. Part of it was that they were so wasted, especially Page and Plant. For years afterwards I wondered how Page could make these incredible records, with ground breaking guitar playing, yet suck so bad live?
This thread has given me a theory. Maybe in the studio he sits in a chair, or wears his guitar in a comfortable position. And live he does the crotch thing to look cool, even though it really affected his playing. Just a theory. Jotown: "It's all good: Except when it's Great".
Joined: Nov The Bear Jew. I'm 31 years old, and I have been playing like this with different guitars since I was Like I said, I tried playing with my guitar in different positions, and the most comfy one for me happens to be at about crotch level. It's weird It doesn't feel right when it's even one inch higher or lower. Part of the reason this feels good to me is probably because I have long-ass ape arms. Of course I was kidding about being more concerned with looking good than sounding good.
Jimmy Page He might have looked good, but he didn't always sound too sweet when he played out. I think that might have more to do with his "attitude" and his massive drug use than the length of his guitar strap.
Joined: Sep Lee Flier. I think, apart from the fact that he was always wasted on the road, that the reason Page didn't sound so hot live is because he's really a studio cat through and through. With Zeppelin it's almost as if the recording studio was another instrument in the band. Page created some awesome sonic landscapes in the studio, with multilayered guitars and and that sort of thing.
I think really he felt lost without it. I think the same could be said of Hendrix - yeah he had the "showman" thing down live but I never cared for his live sound either.
His greatest strength seemed to be in using the guitar to create a soundscape, like Page, and for that he needed to be able to do lots of overdubs. Both of them were almost using the guitar like an orchestral instrument that required the interlocking of different parts. When you stripped it down to one guitar on stage it didn't always work.
I guess they compensated by doing the crotch-guitar thing. Originally posted by Lee Flier: I think the same could be said of Hendrix - yeah he had the "showman" thing down live but I never cared for his live sound either.
Kansas City. Okay, King Missile I didn't hear I just heard it on some like "best of Demento" or something Demento but some of the favorites that have been featured on his show. So, King Missile it is. Funny, with all of this guitar crotch talk, to see some videos from the early Brit invasion period where they're wearing them practically under their chins.
Hey whatever works for you. In the last few years I have noticed some pain in my fingers wrists and arms. There is a clinic in my area that specializes in dancers, athletes and musicians. I have run into cat's from the Detroit Symphony there, and these kinds of ailments are common to anyone who has put thousands of hours into mastering an instrument. I'm just trying to be helpful. I want to be able to play well as long as I can, so I have looked into things like position and technique for my own purpose and health.
I appreciate your advice. My main quibble with this whole thread is that people who play with their instruments low do so only for fashion's sake. While some folks indubitably are guilty of this, there are certainly more than a few people like me, who are just more comfy with the guitar lower.
Of course, it also doesn't hurt that it looks pretty sweet that way as well. Talk about looking uncool! I dunno if Jimmy Page was the first guy to wear his guitar low, but I have to say he looked pretty darn cool that way. I understand your points, though. Some of my friends wear their instruments so low you'd think they're in danger of tripping over them.
Personally, I think they look kinda dumb, because they're wearing those guitars extra low just to look extreme, but they seem to be struggling when they play. Hey, whatever works for ya Joined: Sep Kansas City.

I can't play like that either I prefer to play really high Its just how they play I mean, criticising someones intelligence or sound because of the way they play their guitar?
That seems a little small minded :p Nolly. And as simple as it comes, I only wanted to express But with expression comes regret - and I don't want you hating me. Originally posted by Nollykin: I mean, criticising someones intelligence or sound because of the way they play their guitar? That seems a little small minded. Joined: Jul I used to play mine way down low, but then i discovered how much more control you have when you play it higher.
I did that for a while and started singing in my band too. The guitar kept kitting the mic stand. So now I just play it in a kind of neutral position. If you wear it real high, though, you can do all sorts of crazy stuff that gets a crowd going! No way bro, spinal tap did it, therefore its amazing Joined: Jan Dak Lander.
Well, You know. I suppose it's better than playing out of your ass My fretting hand is not tired or deformed after 4 or 5 hours of playing either. Honestly, I tried that for about five seconds, and never liked it much. And yes, I am a longhaired wabbit! I've never grown it down to my tailbone though; I stop it at the tip of my shoulder blades. Playing low wouldn't work for me. Andrew Whitlock. Originally posted by gratte: Quote:. I think the main problems with the "low rider" style are that it really limits your technique and it can cause wrist problems from hyperextension.
Personally, I spent a lot of time practicing while sitting down and when I stand up and play I find the guitar most comfortable at a slightly lower height than the sitting position. I suspect that at least some of the "crotch Rock" guys haven't bothered with all that practicing anyway so they were free to play the guitar at whatever height looked best in the mirror. I happen to like Jimmy Pages work as a session player and producer by the way but taken by itself his guitar playing pretty much sucked to me.
With Led Zep live he was very sloppy sounding. But he did look cool. Maybe it's better to look good than to play good. Osaka, Japan. Fernando on guitar, eh? When I played with a band in younger days, I found my "comfort level" at about where the center of the guitar body met my belt buckle. And the neck was tilted at about 40 degrees. Now, of course, that belt buckle is rolled a bit lower than before, so I would have to play around with positioning for a spell.
