One of the most common questions I get asked by prospective solo mums is whether I would recommend attending an antenatal class alone. I will admit, it is one of the things I felt uncharacteristically anxious about.
I know there are similar classes around the world. The feedback I have received is many of them are still geared towards people in a partnership. It left me wondering what the others in the group would think about me attending on my own. Would I feel left out? Was the course set up for those with partners? What would I do during the exercises with that required two people? Despite my anxieties I decided to attend anyway. So many friends had told me they made such good connections with the other participants.
They remained firm friends for years to come. For this alone I felt it was worth it. This was a great opportunity to build up my mum tribe. For me, it was the best decision I could have made. I decided to take my mum because she was going to be my birth partner. Exercises will include things such as brisk walking, swimming, yoga and Pilates.
Low impact activities. Meet other parents For this reason alone, attending antenatal classes is very a good idea. The friendships you form at this this time can be ones you have forever. Obviously, you have Dadapp so you probably have loads of friends by now! Ask questions This will be your opportunity to ask as many questions as you can think of in a safe, non-judgmental environment.
Knowledge will vary between couples so understand that there is no such thing as a stupid question. Right, dad?
Antenatal classes are also a good way to make friends with other parents who are expecting babies around the same time as you. These friendships can help you through the first few months with your baby. Think about what you hope to gain from antenatal classes so you can find the sort of class that suits you best.
Places in antenatal classes can get booked up early. It's a good idea to start making enquiries early in pregnancy so you can secure a place in the class that you choose.
You can attend more than 1 class. To find out about classes near you, ask your midwife, health visitor or GP. NHS antenatal classes are free. Overall the classes have helped us feel more prepared, and i would recommend them to anyone. The fact you can message Freya after and ask any questions that pop up is really helpful too and going the extra mile. Freya is approachable, personable and provides a wealth of information from her many years of experience as a midwife.
