Mount Young Pony Club president Les Hosking said the changes will make the area considerably safer by giving them easier access to the equestrian reserve and being able to remount easier. The vegetation on roadsides can hide a horse or vehicle from sight and sounds which means vehicles travel closer than they normally would and therefore can be dangerous.

Both young and older riders are still learning how to handle a horse in different and difficult situations so improving safety for these members of the community was deemed important by both the council and residents.

The changes do not only affect the pony club but other equestrian riders who utilise the land with approximately horses in the area and at least half of these ridden at some time. Road traffic data will also be collected over an extended period and in accordance with Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure policy, to enable the submission of an application for a speed zone review.

Whyalla City Council group manager engineering and infrastructure Adil Jamil, said that changes to speed limits were outside the council's authority and such a request had to be referred to DPTI.
