Personally, I would get the GB slim model if I were forced to replace my console at my cost. According to the Wikipedia article , it appears the 4GB model and the GB model contain the same hardware. However, there was a cosmetic difference - the GB model had a glossy finish whereas the 4GB model has a matte finish. They both now have a matte finish starting in August Also, the GB model comes bundled with a wired headset. The 4GB version has onboard 4GB flash drive while the does't.
The GB version has no onboard flash drive so it remains at GB. The hardware difference is that there is a 4gb harddrive in the 4gb model and a gb harddrive in the gb model.
Especially if you're only using it memory purposes - no XBLA downloads, etc. Once the software library gets a little bigger, you may want to spring for the standalone GB internal hard drive.

I'm not up on the current line of products. But do they have some unit priced between 4GB and GB? My 20GB is a little small in my opinion, but is gigantic and probably not worth it at all unless you're going to download movies or use it as a media center.
